Class number: 89402

By 2050, around 70% of the global population will reside in cities. So, how can businesses and entrepreneurs position themselves well to take advantage of resource efficiency and promote sustainable change? The course "Sustainable Businesses and Cities" is designed to give students a thorough grasp of business and urban (and rural) sustainability, utilizing economic theories. It goes beyond conventional ideas like maximizing profit and economic growth by incorporating the four pillars of sustainability: economic, social, environmental, and human factors. Moreover, it acknowledges the significance of natural resources as essential ecosystem components. The course has four main objectives:

  1. To deepen students' understanding of sustainability in the context of business and cities (urban and rural) through the application of economic theories.
  2. To foster discussions and facilitate understanding of how sustainability principles apply to different industries, sectors, and cities within (and between) developed and developing countries.
  3. To establish connections between the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the specific goals of businesses and economies while also addressing ethical dilemmas that may arise.
  4. To critically examine the entrepreneurial case for sustainability, enhance teamwork, communication skills (both oral and written), and explore the role of sustainability within corporate strategy.

After taking this course, students will be able to analyze and address sustainability issues for businesses in different industries, cities, and economies. They will learn to develop effective strategies to reduce negative impacts and align business practices with sustainability principles.
