Dr. Karin Olson welcomed into 2019 class of American Academy of Nursing Fellows

Academy to Induct 231 Highly Distinguished Nurse Leaders at Annual Policy Conference in October

24 June 2019

Dr. Karin Olson, a Professor at the University of Alberta with the Faculty of Nursing, will join seven other Canadians selected for induction into the 2019 class of the American Academy of Nursing Fellows.

The Prestigious American Academy of Nursing has selected 231 nurse leaders for induction as fellows during the Academy's 2019 Transforming Health, Driving Policy Annual Conference, which will take place October 24-26, 2019 in Washington, D.C.

The newest addition of fellows within this class represents 38 states, the District of Columbia, as well as 17 countries.

Dr. Olson's commitment to the development of evidence-based nursing practice is deeply rooted in researching critical clinical practice questions related to symptom management. She is currently leading a large ethnographic study with data collection in 25 clinical settings to explore facilitators and barriers to shared decision making, defined as a collaboration among health care providers, patients, and informal caregivers of patients to develop plans of care that are based on evidence and on the patient's preferences and values. This new knowledge fits well with the objectives of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science, given its strong research utilization focus.

She is also exploring the potential use of electronic patient portals as a vehicle for promoting shared decision making, along with related policy issues.

The Academy is comprised of more than 2,600 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy, and research. They have been recognized for their extraordinary commitment to the promotion of the public's health through evidence and innovation.
