Admission Requirements


The Department applies the following criteria to determine the appropriate classification for each applicant:

Minimum Admission Requirements


  • A baccalaureate science degree or its equivalent from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta
  • 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale (B+ at North American Universities or its equivalent from other institutions) in the last two full years of undergraduate studies

English Language Proficiency

Applicants with degrees in a language other than English may need to demonstrate English Language Proficiency through one of the following exam scores:

  • TOEFL: minimum score of 600 (paper based) or a total score of 95 with a score of at least 23 in each of the speaking and writing skill areas (internet-based)
  • IELTS: minimum overall band score of 7.0, with a score of at least 6.0 on each band

Possession of these basic requirements does not guarantee admission to the program. Admissions are considered on a competitive basis and factors taken into account in the Department's decision include:

i) performance in basic science courses,

ii) letters of reference,

iii) previous involvement with biomedical research (work and summer student experience),

iv) publications,

v) motivation for studying pharmacology as stated in the "Statement of research interests " form, and

vi) willingness and availability of prospective supervisors to accept and support students.
