Announcing the hiring of Associate Dean, Research

I am excited to announce that Dr. Joanna Harrington has been appointed as Associate Dean, Research for the College of Social Sciences and Humanities effective July 1, 2022 for a three-year term.

Associate Dean, Research - Dr. Joanna Harrington

Joanna Harrington holds the Eldon Foote Chair in International Business and Law at the University of Alberta. A law professor for over 20 years, she teaches, researches and writes on matters of foreign relations law, public international law, international organizations, international human rights law, and transnational criminal law, including foreign corruption, the corporate commission of transnational crimes, and extradition. Her work has been published widely in law journals and edited collections, both in Canada and internationally, and before the pandemic, she regularly presented at conferences around the world.

This role is responsible for leading the research strategy for the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The Associate Dean, Research will report to the College Dean and will be an important member of the College leadership team. Similar to Faculty Associate Deans, College Associate Deans will also be expected to continue to be active members of their home faculty, in teaching and research.

We are also re-launching the recruitment for the role of Associate Dean, Education.

The Associate Dean, Education will provide leadership in educational program development and implementation, including cross-Faculty multidisciplinary initiatives, for both undergraduate and graduate programs. More detail can be found here.

College Associate Deans receive: 

  • a two (2) course teaching release each year
  • an annual administrative stipend ($6,300)

Appointments are for a term of three years (renewable), beginning ASAP.

The appointment decision is made by the College Dean, with the input from an advisory committee for each AD role made up of: 

  • One CSSH faculty dean
  • One senior CSSH faculty academic leader (focused on the “education” or “research” portfolio) from a different faculty than the dean
  • One senior staff member in the area (i.e. “education” or “research” portfolio)
  • College General Manager
