The Complex Hernia and Abdominal Reconstruction Group of Edmonton (CHARGE) is Canada’s first and only comprehensive multi-disciplinary program that treats complex abdominal wall hernias. Our mission is to provide a patient-centered solution that achieves functional improvement, provides a durable and long-lasting repair, and minimizes complications.
As the country’s first comprehensive multidisciplinary abdominal hernia program, CHARGE not only serves the city of Edmonton, but also serves patients from all of Northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories, western Saskatchewan, eastern British Columbia, and parts of Nunavut. We receive a large number of referrals for treatment based on our experience, outcomes and novel treatments for many types of hernias.
The CHARGE program provides streamlined pathways for weight loss, diabetes control, smoking cessation, and strength and conditioning training (prehabilitation). Our surgeons have extensive training and experience to treat the following hernia-related conditions:
- Recurrent hernias
- Complex incisional hernias including abdominal wall reconstruction
- Complications related to mesh, including mesh infection and fistulas
- Parastomal hernias
- Tumor removal defects
- Loss of domain
Our dedicated hernia team offers advanced surgical techniques that have been proven to provide long-lasting durable repairs, comprehensive preoperative and postoperative care that is personalized. We routinely involve a multidisciplinary team of internists, plastic surgeons, wound and pain management specialists, and weight loss physicians and surgeons to obtain the best outcomes for our patients.
