9 August 2022

Dr. Innocent Okello (left), a pediatric surgeon from Kampala, Uganda has spent the better part of a year at the Stollery Children's Hospital for a Global Pediatric General Surgery Fellowship. This summer, Dr. Okello presented his experiences over the past year and how the skills and leadership training that he has gained will go towards creating an impact for pediatric surgery and care in Uganda. In addition to learning new surgical skills, Dr. Okello's main objectives were to understand the needs and opportunities for pediatric surgery in low and middle- income countries and to understand the value of global partnerships.

It was the University of Alberta’s Office of Global Surgery’s first fellowship and Dr. Okello’s mentor was OGS’ director Dr. Abdullah Saleh (right). OGS helps develop health care systems in communities that are under-serviced in Alberta and around the world. It fosters global partnerships to assist in developing healthcare systems, surgical access and care, and academic initiatives.
