Education Abroad Individual Award

About the Award

The Education Abroad Individual Award is designed to help make your international learning experience more affordable! 

Value: $750-$3,750

Total value of the award will be based on the duration of the program, for up to 8 months. The total award granted will be calculated using the following per-student formula.

  • $750 for Month 1
  • $500 per month for Months 2 and 3 (if applicable)
  • $400 per month for Months 4 through 8 (if applicable)

Note: If you are nominated for a University of Alberta International award for the same program or the same semester(s), you will not be eligible to apply for this award. 

How to apply

  • 1. Application Instructions

    Deadline: February 1, 2017

    > Applications must be completed by individual University of Alberta students in our online application portal, Horizons

    > You can access the Scholarship by clicking the “My Scholarships” tab on the top of the database once you’ve created an account. Please be sure to follow all instructions and upload all documents required in the application form.

  • 2. Selection Process

    Selection Criteria

    > Adjudication and selection will be done by an academic panel.
    > Recipients will be announced in early March 2017.

    Acceptance & Conditions

    > Applicants will be notified if they have been nominated for an award and must confirm acceptance of the award; failure to do so will result in forfeiting the award.

    > Award payments will be deposited into the award recipient’s Beartracks account by UAI prior to departure, once confirmation of registration/participation in the abroad experience is received and the pre-departure requirements are complete.

    > Recipients will be required to:

    > Attend a mandatory pre-departure/risk management session and register with UGo

    > Submit a Returned Student Report upon completion of the experience

    > Submit a risk management plan prior to receiving the Award

    > Obtain research ethics approval prior to receiving the Award if undertaking a research project

    > Submit a 500 word written commentary, as well as copies of boarding passes upon completion of the program

    > Recipients will also be encouraged to participate in promotion and recruitment activities for education abroad programming.

Endowed Awards

When you apply for the Education Abroad Individual Award, you are automatically considered for the following endowed awards (if you meet all eligibility criteria):

  • Alberta St. George of England Society Award

    Value: up to $1,250
    Deadline: February 1, 2017

    To apply, students must:

    > be participating in a study exchange for one term (fall or winter) or academic year (fall and winter)
    > study at a UAlberta exchange partner institution in England
    > be a 2nd, 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program
    > have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science)
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, with at least 3.5 in the most recently completed term

  • Alberta-Hong Kong Young Scholars Exchange Award

    Value: Variable, allocation up to $3,500
    Deadline: February 1, 2017

    To apply, students must:

    > be participating in a study exchange for one academic year (fall and winter)
    > study at a UAlberta exchange partner institution in Hong Kong
    > be a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program
    > have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science)
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, with at least 2.7 in the most recently completed term

  • Alberta-Korea Young Scholars Exchange Award

    Value: Variable, up to $3,000
    Deadline: February 1, 2017

    To apply, students must:

    > be participating in a study exchange for one academic year (fall and winter)choose to study at a UAlberta exchange partner institution in South Korea
    > be a 3rd or 4th year undergraduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program
    > have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science)
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, with at least 2.7 in the most recently completed term

  • Dr. Horst A Schmid Travel Bursary

  • Edmonton Burns Club Award

    Value: Variable, up to $2,000
    Deadline: February 1, 2017

    To apply, students must:

    > be participating in a study exchange for one term (fall or winter) or academic year (fall and winter)
    > study at the University of Dundee, Scotlandbe an undergraduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program
    > have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science)
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, with at least 2.7 in the most recently completed term
    > Award recipients agree to perform one or more of the following activities during their study in Scotland:

    > tour of “Burns Country”
    > interview with a recognized authority on Robert Burns
    > take a course related to Robert Burns
    > write and present a paper to the Edmonton Burns Club on recipient’s impressions of Scotland and the life and works of Robert Burns

  • Julia KS Liu Unergraduate Scholarship

    Value: Variable, maximum allocation is $4,000
    Deadline: February 1, 2017

    To apply, students must:

    > be participating in a study exchange for one term (fall or winter) or academic year (fall and winter)
    > study at a UAlberta exchange partner institution in China or Hong Kong
    > be an undergraduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science)
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, with at least 3.5 in the most recently completed term

    To apply, students must:

    > be participating in a university-approved education, research, and/or community service experience outside of Canada
    > be an undergraduate or graduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program
    > have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science)
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, with at least a 3.5 GPA in the most recently completed term

    > be participating in a study exchange or internship choose to study at a UAlberta exchange partner institution in Singapore
    > be an undergraduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program
    > have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science)
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, with at least 2.7 in the most recently completed term

  • Wild Geese Travel Award

    Value: Variable, up to $4,000
    Deadline: February 1, 2017

    To apply, students must:

    > be participating in a study abroad program for one term (fall or winter) or academic year (fall and winter)
    > study at an approved post-secondary institution in Ireland or Northern Ireland
    > be an undergraduate or graduate student registered in a University of Alberta degree program
    > have completed a minimum of *12 credits of UAlberta coursework by the application deadline (*15 credits if registered in the Faculty of Science) for undergraduate students; or have completed at least one term of graduate study by the application deadline for graduate students
    > have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, with at least 2.7 in the most recently completed term for undergraduate students; or have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 on the courses taken for graduate students
