Orpheus in the Underworld

January 12 and 13, 2024
7:00 pm | Convocation Hall

The University of Alberta's Opera Theatre is thrilled to present Offenbach’s masterpiece, Orphée aux Enfers. This daring French operetta is a thought-provoking satire on the timeless myth of Orpheus. What if Orpheus was actually glad of Eurydice's descent to the underworld, and Eurydice was happy in the dark corner of Elysium with its dark lord? Would public opinion allow this to happen? Get ready for a comical performance featuring a grand chorus of Gods ready to dazzle you with captivating classics like the iconic Can Can, all set against the backdrop of 1950's America. This show promises laughter and unforgettable entertainment.

This year marks a milestone for the University Opera Theatre, with its largest class to date, consisting of 35 passionate members ready to bring this extraordinary tale to life. Join us for an fun evening filled with music, drama, and a reimagining of a classic tale!
