"THE BLACK SEA AND BLACK SEA REGION AS A
CONTACT ZONE OF CIVILIZATIONS AND CULTURES"

(9th Annual Drinov Sessions)

Kharkiv, Ukraine 22–23 November 2018

 

The discussions will focus on the following issues:

  • Pontus Euxinos: the Ancient Black Sea region and the Barbarian world
  • Black Sea dimension of the Byzantine oikoumene
  • Black Sea as the "inland lake" of the Ottoman Empire
  • On the edge of "Eastern question": Black Sea and the Straits in European politics from the 1770s to the early 20th century
  • The long 20th century: shifting geopolitical paradigm in the Black Sea basin during 1914–91
  • The Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC) organization and regional international relations under conditions of erosion and collapse of Yalta-Potsdam system.

 

In addition, a round table shall be convened on the topic:

"Problems of regional security and integration in the context of globalization: From the ‘Intermarium’ concept of the 20th century to the Three Seas project of the 21st century"

 

 

Please submit completed application forms (see below) and abstracts (max. 1,000 characters) by 15 April 2018 to the Marin Drinov Centre for Bulgarian and Balkan Studies (email drinovcenter@gmail.com).

 

The working languages of the conferences are Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Russian, and English. The organizing committee reserves the right to reject papers not meeting the criteria or subject of the conference. We plan to publish selected papers in Drynovs'kyi zbirnyk / Drinovskii sbornik (vol. 12, 2019) and East/West: Journal of Ukrainian Studies (proceedings of the final panel and round table to be published in English).
