It is with great sadness that the Faculty of Education shares the news of our colleague Dr. Julie Long’s passing at the age of 42 on March 17, 2016.
A life-long scholar dedicated to education, Julie received her PhD from the University of Alberta in 2008 and was an assistant professor in the Faculty of Education’s Department of Elementary Education for eight years, where she taught mathematics education. In 2012 she was part of a team of elementary education instructors who received a 2012 Teaching Unit Award from the university for EDEL 316: Communicating through Mathematics Education.
Prior to coming to the University of Alberta for her doctoral studies, Julie received a bachelor of science degree from Dalhousie University (1994), and then spent two years teaching in the Federated States of Micronesia with Jesuit Volunteers International. She went on to complete a bachelor of education at the University of New Brunswick (1998) and teach in her home town before continuing her studies with a master of education from UNB (2004).
Above and beyond her studies, Julie is remembered by family, friends and colleagues as an extraordinarily caring and loving being. She was the wife of Patrick Savoie and the mother of two sons, Rémi and Maxime. Born in Grand Falls, NB, she was the daughter of Rino and Beatrice (Toner) Long.

The university flag on top of the North Campus Administration Building will be lowered from March 24 to March 29, 2016, in memory of Julie.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 26 at 9:30 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel (9709-111 Ave).
