ATEP Director named Faculty’s first Associate Dean, Indigenous Teacher Education

Dr. Evelyn Steinhauer will provide strategic leadership in all aspects of Indigenous Teacher Education, including matters relating to Indigenous engagement

2023-06-29-evelyn.jpgOn June 1, 2023, educational policy studies professor and director of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP) Dr. Evelyn Steinhauer was appointed the Faculty of Education’s first Associate Dean, Indigenous Teacher Education, a significant milestone for ATEP and the Faculty.

As Associate Dean, Indigenous Teacher Education, Dr. Steinhauer will continue to provide critical leadership to ATEP, especially as the AD role absorbs the responsibilities of the ATEP Director. In addition, Dr. Steinhauer will provide strategic leadership to the Faculty of Education in all aspects of Indigenous Teacher Education, including matters relating to Indigenous engagement. This role provides vision and direction for the development and implementation of Indigenous-related strategies throughout the Faculty of Education including lifting and living ATEP’s guiding principles.

In fulfilling the responsibilities of the role, the Associate Dean, Indigenous Teacher Education is informed by the University of Alberta’s mission, vision, principles, values, the Indigenous Strategic plan, the Faculty of Education’s Strategic plan, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, and the Dean’s Accord on Indigenous Education. The Associate Dean, Indigenous Teacher Education is responsible for building authentic, trust-based partnerships and collaborations with internal and external Indigenous communities and working to foreground Indigenous concepts, methodologies, pedagogies, languages, and philosophies into the tapestry of Indigenous and mainstream teacher education.
