Graduate Program in Religious Studies

Thank you for your interest in the PhD program and the Master of Arts program in Religious Studies. Our on-line application portal opens on September 15 to accept applications for the following academic year. Please note that there is a $135 CAD application fee.

The deadline to apply for the Religious Studies PhD and MA programs is January 15.

It is the applicant's responsibility to ensure that all documents are uploaded on time. To meet respective deadlines, we strongly encourage you to have all of your documents ready to upload at the time that you access your on-line application. No action will be taken on applications until all documents have been uploaded and the application fee ($135 CAD) has been paid.

The Program in Religious Studies and related faculty members currently have research strength to supervise graduate-level study in many topics. Please do not apply to the program unless, in communication with the Program Director & Graduate Coordinator, you have identified a potential supervisor. Areas of particular strength include:

  • Hinduism (ancient, medieval, and modern Hindu thought; yoga, tantra, and medical traditions)
  • Islam (Medieval Islam; Islamic law; Muslim cultures of North and West Africa)
  • East Asian Buddhism, Japanese religions
  • Christianity (early Christian literature)
  • Jewish Studies

Ethics Training Requirements

Ethics and academic integrity training is mandatory for all newly-admitted U of A graduate students who started their degree program on or after September 1, 2004. For information about the requirements, see the FGSR website.
