Anniversary: MMIWG and Indigenous Women on Rising Up

On May 28, 2021, IG presented a key event at Congress 2021 (Northern Relations), hosted at UAlberta, “MMIWG and Indigenous Women on Rising Up”. Moderated and organized by former IG Associate Director Rebecca Sockbeson, this event shared thinking and addressed findings of the 2019 Final Report of the National Inquiry into Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls (MMIWG) from 12 distinguished Indigenous activists, community centered scholars, and organizers, and offered the performances of Indigenous artists as creative expressions of impact as a result of the realities of MMIWG. The event additionally featured live translations in several Indigenous languages, including Nakoda/Stoney, Cree, and Dene, as well as a generous opening prayer by Elder Ekti of Saddle Lake First Nation. The event sought to mobilize action for MMIWG in the academy with the intention to impact the education system and society at large.
The event, falling then so close on the heels of the 215 children discovered on the site of the Kamloops Residential School, is as powerful now as it was at that moment; we invite you to watch again or for the first time to watch or listen to the voices and performances of these amazing women.
