Cheer Team

Cheer team together after an event

The U of A Cheerleading Team is a competitive collegiate team for U of A students interested in gymnastics, stunting, jumping, and dancing.

We compete locally, nationally, and internationally. We also strive to motivate, entertain, and promote the sport of cheerleading at football games, as well as other various UofA and community events! Check us out at the clubs fair every year in September!

Teams
Gameday
Game day tryouts are typically in the first week of September. Our game day team is responsible for attending football games and community events throughout the year. At games, we perform a couple band chants, cheers and sideline safe stunting! The typical length of the season is from September to November with the occasional community event throughout the year.
Competitive
Our competitive team tryouts are typically in the second or third week of September. This team does not attend football games, but is encouraged to attend community events along with our game day team throughout the year. We have competed in the advanced level (level 3/4/5) locally, and in the elite level (5/6) when we attend worlds. Every year we have a choreography/skills camp where we spend the weekend learning our choreography for the upcoming season and doing some team bonding!
Practices, Fundraisers, and Competitions
Practices
Practices are twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday nights with 1-2 Sundays a month. Gameday trains directly before competitive and we have many athletes on both teams. Experience is considered an asset for tryouts but is not required!
Fundraisers
Every year our team hosts fundraisers such as bake sales, bar nights, Christmas fundraisers, and more!
Competitions

The competitions we attend every year are the following: Cold Snap Classic, Victoria Cheer Championships, Cheerific Western Cheer challenge, True North Cheer, and Dance, and one travelling competition!

In the past, we have attended: Sea to Sky Cheer Championships, Cheer Sport in Atlanta, USA All-Star Championships in Anaheim, ICU University World Cup Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, and more!

Club History

The University of Alberta Cheer Team was founded in 1919 and began as “The Rooters Club.” They were dedicated to sitting at hockey and basketball games and yelling different chants, as well as hosting pep rallies. Their executive team consisted of a President and “Cheer Leaders.” Over the years, the sport developed from a male-dominated club to the mostly female/ Coed sport we have today.

Recently, we have earned 3 Full Paid Bids to the ICU University World Cup Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida! Our first year we placed 3rd in the Small Coed elite division. The second time we went we placed 1st in the All-Girl elite division! We currently still have our 3rd bid and can’t wait to go compete again!

We have also won Club of the Year several times, notably in 2012, 2016, and 2017, as well as the Platinum Supporting School and Community Spirit Award from the Alberta Cheerleading Association in 2017.

In 2018 we received a sponsorship from the Alberta Cheerleading Association to send 4 members of our team as Canadian representatives to a Game Day camp in Wisconsin. We learned from experts and brought back knowledge and experience that has already developed Game-day programs across Alberta.
