Stories of the Unquiet Dead: Negotiating Ritual Change on the Prairies

27 January 2017

Graveyards are extremely important to Ukrainian Canadians. Burying one's ancestors in this country was like sinking roots into Canadian soil and planting a new identity. More recently, graveyards have been the locus for negotiating change. Sanctuary Project fieldwork shows that stories about graveyards and those who can or cannot rest in them are used to modify ritual. These stories provide a new perspective on vernacular religion.

"Stories of the Unquiet Dead: Negotiating Ritual Change on the Prairies" was a presentation given by Dr. Natalie Kononenko on January 27, 2017 as part of the Folklore Lunch Series organized by the Kule Folklore Centre at the Faculty of Arts, University of Alberta. Dr. Kononenko is the Kule Chair in Ukrainian Ethnography.
