International Archives Week 2023

5 June 2023

In honor of International Archives Week (June 5-9), The Kule Folklore Centre would like to highlight some of the wonderfully versatile collections in our Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives.

The Patricia Pelech Carrow Ukrainian Folk Art Collection

Patricia Pelech was an accomplished multimedia artist and involved member of the Ukrainian community. In the summers of 1976-1981, she taught the Ukrainian Folk Weaving class at the Banff School of Fine Arts. This extensive collection presents visual reference materials compiled for the instructional slides in this class by Patricia and her mother, Fiona Pelech. These images are sure to be of interest to anyone interested in traditional Ukrainian clothing, as well as the practices of weaving and embroidery.

This collection of 103 digitized photographs allows visitors to view images of
Byzantine rite churches in rural Alberta created by Orest Semchishen, one of Canada’s finest documentary photographers. Throughout his career, Semchishen focused his keen eye on exploring and documenting rural communities, city business districts and markets, ethnic groups, fur trappers and prairie farms. He has compiled an extraordinary record of Canadian life, centered on the Prairies but extending across the country; we are very lucky to be able to share these photographs with our community members!
