The Chimo Puppies at the Faculty of Law!!!

Wednesday, November 27, 2013 from 11:30am to 1:00pm, University of Alberta Faculty of Law

University of Alberta law students discovered that the secret to staying calm amidst the stress of law school: cuddle sessions with furry, four-legged friends. Four adorable canines came to the Faculty of Law building on Wednesday, November 27, to soothe the nerves of law students anxious about upcoming end-of-term papers and exams. The visit – which it is hoped will become something of a law school tradition – was made possible by Edmond O'Neill, Esq., with Beresh, Cunningham, Aloneissi, O'Neill and Hurley, Barristers and Solictors

Research has clearly shown that petting dogs is helpful in calming us and alleviating stress. Scientists believe that it releases hormones that improve our mood, and decrease our heart rate and blood pressure. The list of scientific evidence goes on and on, but it was not science that drew law students to the second floor of the Faculty of Law! The Chimo puppies were at the law school!!!! Chimo (“stress”) puppies have been specially trained to be calm and accessible to people.

“I wish the puppies could come every month!” stated one law student. “I feel so relaxed having spent time with them before I head back to the law library.”

The Law Students Association (LSA) targeted mental health issues as being a priority this year. In keeping with that theme, the Director of Academic and Cultural Support, Shannon Gullberg, took steps to have the Chimo puppies attend at the Law School to help ease the stress of the students.

“This is amazing!” exclaimed another law student. “The dogs made me so happy by just being here. Thank you so much to the Chimo puppies, the sponsors, and the law school. This was just what I needed!”

The University of Alberta Faculty of Law would like to thank the event sponsors Edmond O'Neill, Esq., with Beresh, Cunningham, Aloneissi, O'Neill and Hurley, Barristers and Solicitors, for their generous and kind support of this event. The Law School would also like to thank Chimo Animal-Assisted Therapy and their staff for bringing the Chimo puppies and for helping to create such a wonderful event for the law students. Finally, a big thanks to Director of Academic and Cultural Support, Shannon Gullberg, for spearheading the event.

“The thanks goes to Edmond O'Neill of Beresh, Cunningham, Aloneissi, O'Neill and Hurley, who personally sponsored the event,” Shannon Gullberg said. “Thank you Mr. O'Neill! End-of-term can be a stressful time for law students as papers and exams loom, we want to show them that we are here to help them and make their time at the Faculty of Law feel less intimidating and stressful.”
