Nurse Practitioner

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are Registered Nurses with advanced knowledge, skills and competencies. They integrate elements such as diagnosing, ordering and interpreting investigative tests, treating health problems, and prescribing drugs into their practice.

The Canadian Nurses Association has created the following page regarding Nurse Practitioners in Canada: This page includes a variety of information about the role of NPs as well as a video with further information.

To practice as a Nurse Practitioner in Alberta, a person must be registered with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) in one of three streams of NP practice (family/all ages, adult, or child).

The Government of Alberta also provides an occupational profile of Nurse Practitioners.
