Dr. Shawna Dolansky is currently the interim director of the College of the Humanities at Carleton University in Ottawa, where she is also Associate Professor of Religion and Humanities. Her research in the fields of Hebrew Bible and ancient Near Eastern studies has ranged from thinking about magic in the ancient world, to goddesses in myth and iconography, and finally to questions of gender and historiography. She is the general editor of Hebrew Bible content on Bibleodyssey.org, and a frequent contributor to thetorah.com and Biblical Archaeology Review.

Scroll and Spade: Where the Bible and Archaeology Do – And Do Not – Intersect
In this lecture, Dr. Shawna Dolansky from Carleton University reviews some major finds that intersect either positively or negatively with the biblical text. After examining a variety of artifacts and sites and discussing the ways in which they impact – or are impacted by – our understanding of the biblical text, we find that while archaeology may not always “prove” the bible, with archaeology we can definitely improve our understanding of the history and religions of the people who produced it.
Dr. John-Paul Himka is a professor emeritus in the Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta. He serves on the executive of the Western Canadian Center of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and is a member of the Canadian Association of Slavists. He served as the co-editor for history of vols. 3-5 of the Encyclopedia of Ukraine. He has published five monographs on Ukrainian history: Socialism in Galicia: The Emergence of Polish Social Democracy and Ukrainian Radicalism (1860-1890) (1983); Galician Villagers and the Ukrainian National Movement in the Nineteenth Century (1988); Religion and Nationality in Western Ukraine: The Greek Catholic Church and the Ruthenian National Movement in Galicia, 1867-1900 (1999); Last Judgment Iconography in the Carpathians (2009); and Ukrainian Nationalists and the Holocaust: OUN and UPA’s Participation in the Destruction of Ukrainian Jewry, 1941-1944 (2021). Co-edited books include Bringing the Dark Past to Light: The Reception of the Holocaust in Post-Communist Europe (with Joanna Beata Michlic) (2013) and Eastern Christians in the Habsburg Monarchy (with Franz A.J. Szabo) (2021). Noteworthy articles include "Young Radicals and Independent Statehood: The Idea of a Ukrainian Nation-State, 1890-1895," Slavic Review (1982); "The Construction of Nationality in Galician Rus': Icarian Flights in Almost All Directions," in Intellectuals and the Articulation of the Nation, ed.
