Currently 10 diagnostic radiologists/nuclear medicine physicians have full-time appointments in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. Each has a unique profile of research, administrative and educational responsibilities in addition to maintaining a busy clinical practice. These physicians spearhead our research and supervise most of our trainees.

Dr. Derek Emery, Chair, Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging, University of Alberta Hospital

Derek Emery is Chair of the Department of Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging, as well as Medical Director of the Peter S. Allen In Vivo MR Research Facility. He has clinical fellowships in Neuroradiology (University of Toronto) and Interventional Neuroradiology (Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis). His current research focuses on appropriateness and utilization of imaging.
Dr. Richard Coulden, University of Alberta Hospital
Dr. Richard Coulden holds the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute Medical Imaging Consultants Research Chair. He has an extensive research career in cardiac imaging.
Dr. Robert Lambert (University of Alberta Hospital)

Dr. Lambert graduated from Queen's University, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, in 1980. He did his radiology residency in Belfast and then completed postgraduate training with a two-year musculoskeletal (MSK) radiology fellowship in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He holds Fellowships in the Royal College of Radiologists (UK) and the Royal College of Physicians of Canada. Dr. Lambert was head of MSK radiology at the University of Alberta from 1989-2002 and has been at the forefront of radiology innovation in Alberta, being responsible for the development of MSK MRI and introducing interventional MSK services such as vertebroplasty and ablation of benign bone tumours. Dr. Lambert was Chair of the Department from 2002-2016.
His primary research interests are MSK MRI and the imaging of arthritis. This includes the development and clinical validation of image-based definitions and scoring tools for assessment of spondyloarthritis and osteoarthritis; MRI evaluation of hyaline cartilage and bone marrow; and randomized trials of arthritis therapy. His research activities involve networks of Canadian and international investigators and he has worked with multiple collaborative groups that have participated in the development of scoring systems based on imaging that are used in both diagnostic and therapeutic settings as well as clinical trials research. He has published well over 100 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and is a member of several international societies related to MSK radiology and arthritis research.

Dr. Richard Thompson is currently appointed as Professor in the Department of Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging. He teaches BME 564 - Fundamentals of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, MRI.
Dr. Alan Wilman is currently appointmented as Professor in the Department of Radiology & Diagnostic Imaging. He is trained as an MRI physicist. His current research is in the physics and engineering of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). He teaches BME 513 - Imaging Methods in Medicine.

Dr. Lawrence Le (Medical Physics)

Dr. Lawrence Le obtained his PhD in geophysics from the University of Alberta. He did his postdoctoral training in Schlumberger-Doll Research, Ridgefield Connecticut, USA and later was a research associate in the University of Calgary. He started his medical physics residency training in 1994 and is currently a medical physicist in Alberta Health Services. Dr. Le is a Clinical Professor in Medical Physics and Radiology and has also been the Director of the Graduate Program in the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging since 2014. Dr. Le also holds the rank of Adjunct Professor at Fudan University, China, and is currently a senior visiting Fudan scholar (2018-2019).
His primary research interest is ultrasound imaging of bone tissues relevant to patient care. This includes basic research, development of innovative imaging techniques, and clinical validation. His research involves multi-disciplinary methods to solve medical-related problems, spanning from ultrasound physics, biomedical engineering, signal processing, image processing and analysis, prototype development, to electronics. His graduate students benefit from his wide network of collaborators within the campus and worldwide.

Dr. Jonathan Abele (Royal Alexandra Hospital)

Dr. Abele has dual Diagnostic Imaging / Nuclear Medicine professional certification. His research interests are in molecular imaging, including recent introduction of 18F-DOPA PET-CT for more effective imaging of conditions such as neuroendocrine tumors, neuroblastoma, brain gliomas and Parkinson's disease.

Dr. Dhillon is a musculoskeletal radiologist whose academic appointment focuses on educational initiatives. He has recently developed a 25 station state of the art teaching laboratory for diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy planning.

Dr Gavin Low

Dr. Gavin Low was educated at the University of Edinburgh (MBChB) and University of Cambridge (MPhil), and underwent clinical training in radiology in Glasgow, Scotland, and a body imaging fellowship at the University of Alberta. His main research interests are in transplant imaging (Liver, Renal, Pancreas and Islet), in imaging characterization of focal lesions in the abdomen using ultrasound, CT and MRI, and recently in magnetic resonance elastography.
Dr. Michelle Noga

Michelle Noga is a pediatric cardiovascular radiologist, Associate Professor, Chair of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Pediatric Examination Board, and Medical Director of the Servier Virtual Cardiac Centre. She obtained her MD at University of Alberta, residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Alberta, and clinical fellowship at British Columbia's Women's and Children's Hospital. Her main research interests are in pediatric congenital heart imaging, 3D immersive display, with recent evolving focus on machine-learning medical image segmentation and analysis.

Jacob Jaremko is a pediatric musculoskeletal radiologist, Associate Professor and Capital Health Endowed Chair. He obtained a combined MD-PhD at the University of Calgary, residency training in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Alberta, and two clinical fellowships: Pediatric Radiology at the Royal Children's Hospital / University of Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia, and Musculoskeletal Radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital / Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. His main research interests are in pediatric musculoskeletal development and adult arthritis, recently focusing on machine-learning medical image analysis.

Dr. Kumar Punithakumar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging, University of Alberta and the Operational and Computational Director in the Servier Virtual Cardiac Center, Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute. He received the B.Sc.Eng. degree (Hons.) in electronic and telecommunication engineering from the University of Moratuwa and the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from McMaster University. From 2008 to 2012, he was an Imaging Research Scientist with GE Healthcare. His research interests include medical image analysis and visualization, information fusion, and object tracking.
