As the seasons change and the weather starts to cool, allow yourself to be transported back to a hot summer’s day. Join us for Warm Winds, a concert of music presented by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra Wind Quintet. This programme will feature some of the beloved gems of the wind quintet repertoire, including Samuel Barber’s sultry and evocative Summer Music, and award-winning Cuban composer Paquito D’Rivera’s Aires Tropicales, which brings together Latin dance rhythms and jazz influences. Rounding out the programme will be works by pioneering American composer Amy Beach and German Romantic composer August Klughardt, in an afternoon of music that highlights the dazzling array of colours that five wind instruments can create.
The ESO Wind Quintet is made up of the five female principal wind players of the Edmonton Symphony: Elizabeth Koch, flute; June Kim, oboe; Julianne Scott, clarinet; Bianca Chambul, bassoon; and Allene Hackleman, horn. The ESO Wind Quintet has been performing together since 2020.
This concert is a part of the Department of Music's 2022-2023 Faculty & Friends Series.
Bianca Chambul (bassoon)
Born in Toronto, Bianca Chambul was appointed Principal Bassoon of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in June 2019.
During her time as a freelance bassoonist and contrabassoonist, Bianca performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and Toronto’s Tapestry Opera. She has appeared as a concerto competition winner with the Rice University Chamber Orchestra, the University of Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra. Upcoming solo performances include a Vivaldi bassoon concerto with the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, the Mozart Bassoon Concerto with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and Édouard Dupuy’s original quintet for bassoon and strings with the Chamber Orchestra of Edmonton.
Bianca has participated in several summer music festivals, including Le Domaine Forget (2009), the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (2012, 2013), and the National Academy Orchestra (2015, 2016). While attending the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara in 2019, she was awarded a residency fellowship with the London Symphony Orchestra and had the opportunity to perform with the LSO in England’s historic St. Paul’s Cathedral under the direction of Simon Rattle in June 2022.
In 2019, Bianca completed one year of her Master’s degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston, Texas under the tutelage of Professor Benjamin Kamins. She obtained her performance undergraduate degree in 2016 at the University of Toronto, studying with Eric Hall, Principal Bassoon of Chicago’s Grant Park Orchestra and the Canadian Opera Company. Bianca received the William and Phyllis Waters Graduating Award, and was on the University of Toronto music faculty as a sessional bassoon instructor for the 2017 winter term.
Allene Hackleman (horn)
Allene Hackleman has been principal horn of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra since 2004. A native of Vancouver, B.C., Allene studied horn with Martin Hackleman, and completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Cincinnati. Ms Hackleman has performed concerti with the Edmonton Symphony, Alberta Baroque Ensemble, Red Deer Symphony and the Victoria Symphony, and has also played with the Montréal and National symphonies, as well as the Calgary Philharmonic, Winnipeg Symphony and the Colorado Music Festival. She is a member of the Canadian National Brass Project and the Summit Brass, and is on the most recent CD recordings with both groups. Allene enjoys chamber music and has been a guest artist at the Festival of the Sound, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, Toronto Summer Music, the Edmonton Recital Society, and the Pender Harbour Chamber Music Festival, and was a featured artist at the International Women’s Brass conference in 2010. In 2015, Allene was invited to teach masterclasses at the Musikacademy in Belgrade, Serbia. Allene also teaches at the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute in Denver, Colorado in the summers, and during the year teaches horn at the University of Alberta.
June Kim (oboe)
June Kim joined the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra as Principal Oboe in 2020. Previously she served as principal oboe of Symphony Nova Scotia for 2016-2017 season.
June has appeared as guest principal oboe with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed with numerous orchestras in North America, including the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
In addition to her orchestral career, June is a passionate chamber musician. She is the oboist in the woodwind quintet with her fellow colleagues from the orchestra and has been the oboist in Midic Winds since 2012. Her quintet is the bronze medalists in the senior wind division of the 2013 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. They were featured as concerto soloists with the Eastman Wind Ensemble, performing Robert Russell Bennett’s Concerto Grosso.
In 2020, June received an Artist Diploma from The Glenn Gould School studying under the tutelage of Sarah Jeffrey. She received her master’s degree from Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. June earned her Bachelor of Music Degree as well as the prestigious Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music. Her former teachers include Robert Atherholt, Richard Killmer, and Jean Landa.
In her spare time, June enjoys doing jigsaw puzzles and reading.
Elizabeth Koch (flute)
Originally from a suburb of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Elizabeth Koch has been the Principal Flute of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra since 1987. She studied at The New School of Music in Philadelphia and at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Her teachers include David Cramer, recently retired Assistant Principal Flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Jeffery Khaner, Principal Flute of the Philadelphia Orchestra, and Adeline Tomasone, recently retired from Opera Philadelphia. During summers, she studied at the Blossom Festival and at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orkester, where, in 1987, she was the only American flutist to play under Leonard Bernstein.
Since arriving in Edmonton, she has been a soloist with the Edmonton Symphony, the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, the Arden Ensemble, Edmonton Chamber Orchestra, and the Alberta College Percussion Ensemble, among others. As a chamber musician, she was a founding member of the Woodwind Trio Take 3 (1992-1998) which was heard frequently on CBC. Along with Shelley Younge, Petar Dundjerski, and Elizabeth Faulkner, she is a founding member of The Top Notes Flute Quartet which has performed around Alberta. Elizabeth is also a member of the newly-formed Edmonton Symphony Woodwind Quintet. She has also enjoyed playing with many of the chamber groups in Edmonton over the years.
Elizabeth teaches at The King’s University and Concordia University of Edmonton and maintains a private studio at home, where she has taught students aged 6 to 87. She has also recently started up a flute ensemble of eager adult amateurs in Sherwood Park.
Julianne Scott (clarinet)
Clarinetist Julianne Scott has performed and studied in both the United States and Canada. She has been Principal Clarinet of the Edmonton Symphony since 2009, and previously held the position of Principal Clarinet with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. She attained her Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance from the University of Toronto, where she was a student of Joaquin Valdepenas. She then continued her studies with Yehuda Gilad at the University of Southern California, from which she received her Master’s Degree.
Julianne has appeared as a soloist with the Colorado Springs Philharmonic, Alberta Baroque Ensemble, and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. She has also spent summers participating in a variety of festivals including the Aurora Chamber Music Festival, Sunflower Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, the Spoleto Festival, and the Music Academy of the West. Julianne currently resides in Edmonton where she is on the clarinet faculty at the University of Alberta.
