A message from Dean Kyle Murray

As we approach the end of 2021, I want to take a moment to pause and reflect on another memorable year together in the Alberta School of Business. I am very proud of our students, faculty and staff and the work we continue to achieve together. I am grateful for the people who make up our Alberta School of Business family, who continue to innovate, excel and make a positive difference here at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton and in communities around the world. 

While it’s been another difficult year of hybrid learning and teaching, I’m inspired by the resilience shown by students, faculty and staff and their willingness and ability to adapt, learn and grow. While hardly extensive, here are some highlights from this past year:

The Alberta School of Business maintains its reputation as one of the top business schools in Canada, reflected in a third-place research ranking and sixth-place overall ranking in the 2022 Maclean’s Best University Business Programs in Canada.

The bachelor of commerce program began accepting applications to its first cohort of direct entry students from high school! Our students continue to lead by example, like PhD student Kylie Heales who was selected as a recipient of the 2021 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship. 

We welcomed new graduates to our growing alumni community — like Margeaux Maron and Frances Heaton — bringing our alumni network to over 30,000 around the world. 

We’ve prioritized work-integrated and experiential learning through programs like Making Edmonton Digital and ELITE, a new work-integrated internship program that immerses Black students in STEM and business. 

It’s been one year since the launch of the Alberta School of Business EDI strategic plan and with that has come new initiatives like the Indigenous Business Students Association and Introduction to Indigenous Business, a new course developed and taught by David Deephouse. 

Our Faculty are leaders in research and teaching excellence, like Royston Greenwood, who is one of nine University of Alberta researchers whose work ranks among the most highly cited in the world over the last decade.

Finally, the Alberta School of Business hosted a number of events this year, like the International Women’s Day panel discussion and two Eric Geddes lectures on The Future of Work and The Digital Transformation. 

As we move into the holiday season, please be sure to rest and care for yourself and those around you. Above all, I wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season, and look forward to sharing in the exciting opportunities of the New Year.
