Accommodation Grants
All students (Canadian citizens and permanent residents) interested in using fundable approved accommodation services or purchasing Adaptive Technology(ies) are required to apply for federal and provincial grants to defray the costs of those services and equipment. Failure to apply will result in either:
- suspension of accommodation services pending payment of the outstanding balance; or,
- an encumbrance will be placed on the student's University file until the student makes up the shortfall.
All receipts for services must be submitted to your federal and provincial funding agencies by the end of your student loan period. Students must demonstrate that grant funding has been used appropriately; - any unused grant funds must be returned to your federal and provincial funding agencies.
Students with extenuating circumstances that prevent them from applying for federal and/or provincial funding should consult with their Accessibility Advisor as soon as possible. All cases are considered individually and, in the circumstance that grant funding does not cover the cost of approved accommodation service(s), the University will assume responsibility for the remaining balance. Accessibility Advisors will work with international students to identify funding to cover the costs of approved accommodation services.
The CSG-PD provides $2,000 - $4,000 per loan year to be used for educational and living costs. This grant can reduce the amount you owe on your student loan and can add up to significant savings over time.
First time CSG-PD only applicants
The following items must be submitted together:
- Obtain your student loan application ID number.
- Submit to ASC your documentation of disability/medical condition. The documentation must contain specific information regarding diagnosis, symptoms, permanency, and functional impact of disability in the academic environment.
- Contact your Accessibility Advisor to complete the application.
If you have previously received the CSG-PD, your federal funding agency will consider you for CSG-PD every year you apply for a student loan.
If you apply for this grant, you will be considered for CSG-PD as well.
This grant provides up to $20,000 per loan year to fund accommodation services and adaptive technologies required to support your academic success.
First time CSG-PDSE applicants
The following items must be submitted together:
- A completed hard copy loan application.
- Submit to ASC your documentation of disability/medical condition. The documentation must contain specific information regarding diagnosis(ies), symptoms, permanency, and functional impact of disability in the academic environment.
- Meet with your accommodation service provider/adaptive technologist to complete the application.
Once the grant application has been approved, you will receive a cheque for the approved amount of the grant. This cheque will be clearly marked "Grant for Students with Permanent Disabilities" and will be accompanied by a Notice of Assessment letter. Please read the letter carefully and make sure you set this money aside to cover the cost of your accessibility-related accommodations and/or adaptive technology. The grant money cannot be used for any other purpose and you must submit receipts showing that the grant issued to you was used for the purpose it was requested. Receipts should be sent to Students Finance by the end of the academic year.
The CSG-PD and CSG-SE may be submitted together when support/service costs have been determined the CSG-PD is ready for submission.
A student who has a calculated need of zero or is a recipient of AISH may be considered for services and /or equipment expenses through the GFD.
- Maximum entitlement per academic year, if you are only eligible for GFD, is $3,000.
- If you are eligible for the CSG-SE, you can additionally access GFD for Spring & Summer attendance.
Once the grant application has been approved, your funding agency will notify you. Please carefully read the information from your funding agency and set this grant aside to cover the cost of your accommodation services and/or adaptive technologies. The grant money cannot be used for any other purpose and you must submit receipts showing that the grant issued to you was used for the purpose it was requested. Receipts and unused funds should be sent to your funding agency by the end of your student loan period.
Please see below the grant funding information relevant to your province of residence. Residency is based upon whether you (as an independent student) or your parent(s), step-parent(s), sponsor(s), or legal guardian(s) (as a dependent student) have lived in a Canadian province or territory for 12 consecutive months. You are able to apply for student aid only in the Canadian province or territory in which you are considered a resident.
Alberta residents can access fundable accommodations immediately with the understanding that they will complete an application for funded services (Alternate Format, Sign Language Interpreting and CART, Educational Assistant).

- Ask your healthcare practitioner to complete the Disability Verification Form (Students with Permanent or Persistent/Prolonged Disabilities)
- Apply as a full-time student if registered in 40% or more of the required course load: 6 credits in Fall/Winter and 3 credits in Spring/Summer.

- Notify your Accessibility Advisor after receiving your loan application ID number.
- A Schedule 4 will be completed and sent to ASA with your medical documentation.
