Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta is one of Canada’s best ranked mechanical engineering departments within the Faculty of Engineering. With faculty and researchers from diverse areas — including design, manufacturing, fluid dynamics and thermodynamics — we tackle real-world industrial challenges through interdisciplinary research and innovation.
At its heart, our department is dedicated to shaping the future of industry: creating systems and technologies that make manufacturing safer and more precise, enable net-zero energy solutions, and drive technological advancement. We are committed to shaping the future of industry and infrastructure through engineering.
History
The University of Alberta's Faculty of Engineering, including mechanical engineering, was established in 1908, starting with a small class of five students and graduating its first engineers in 1913. The faculty has grown significantly since then, and mechanical engineering is now a prominent part of the engineering faculty, known for both undergraduate and graduate studies. The department recently launched the first mechatronics and robotics program in the prairie provinces.
