What is the PhD program?

The Doctor of Philosophy program requires completion of four graduate courses, followed by a candidacy exam, and the defense of an original thesis expected to make a significant contribution to your field of study. Program Objectives

  • Develop Independent Research Leadership: Empower students to conduct original, high-impact research that advances the frontiers of mechanical engineering in specialized areas such as health technologies and human performance systems; advanced manufacturing, automation, and product development; sustainable energy and environmental engineering solutions; fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and propulsion systems; automation, robotics and intelligent control systems; high-performance materials and structural reliability; engineering systems integration, reliability and operations.
  • Advance Scholarly and Professional Excellence: Empower students to develop the analytical rigour, technical mastery, and communication skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to academia, industry, and policy-making on a global scale.
  • Foster Innovation through Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Promote cross-disciplinary engagement to address complex engineering challenges and drive technological advancements.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate expert-level knowledge in mechanical engineering, with the ability to conduct advanced research, apply specialized techniques, and critically assess the limits and complexity of disciplinary knowledge in relation to alternative methods and perspectives.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to design and conduct original research in mechanical engineering, including formulating research questions, applying appropriate methodologies, analyzing data, and making informed judgments on complex issues—resulting in scholarly work suitable for peer review publication.
  3. Demonstrate effective written, oral, and digital communication skills, including the ability to clearly present complex ideas and research findings to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, and to produce field-appropriate publications suitable for peer review.
  4. Demonstrate intellectual independence and professional responsibility, including the ability to plan and carry out research autonomously, reflect on career development, respond to feedback, and apply leadership, communication, and safety practices appropriate to academic and professional contexts.
  5. Demonstrate ethical awareness and responsible conduct in research and professional practice, including the ability to identify and address ethical issues related to academic integrity, data handling, intellectual property, societal impact, and the technical responsibilities of the engineering profession.

Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering Management (Mechanical Engineering)

In addition to the PhD in mechanical engineering, the department also offers a PhD in engineering management that bridges engineering, technology, and business management, preparing professionals for academic, high-level research or strategic leadership roles.
