Program overview
Tailored for dentists, oral surgeons, and orthodontists, this course pairs essential theory with hands-on lab and live-patient training so you can confidently perform simple miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansions.
Syllabus
Led by expert orthodontists, this course combines morning lectures on expansion history, techniques, and anatomical changes (skeletal, dental, soft tissue, and airway) with a hands-on afternoon session designed for immediate practice integration.

Prerequisites
- Doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or doctor of medicine in dentistry (DMD) degree
- Letter of good standing from your local regulatory authority or a copy of your current practice permit
- Out of province: Active practicing license from your Canadian dental regulatory authority
Prerequisites
To participate, participants must:
- Hold a DDS/DMD degree & active practicing license from your dental regulatory authority in Canada.
- Provide a letter of good standing from their current dental regulatory authority, if they are out of province.
- Current Heart & Stroke Foundation CPR certificate.
- ONLY Heart and Stroke Foundation CPR is accepted, due to corresponding ACLS training and certification through the foundation.
Location
The course takes place at the Calgary Aurum Facility (115 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0A1).

Our leading faculty
Dr. Manuel Oscar Lagravère Vich
Director, orthodontic graduate program
Dr. Lagravère, DDS, MSc, PhD, was born in Lima, Peru, where he completed his degree in dental science (2000) and masters in science (2003) at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia.
After this, he moved to Edmonton to pursue a PhD in orthodontic which was completed in July 2009 in the University of Alberta. Since then, Lagravère has moved in the faculty ranks being promoted to tenured-professor in orthodontics since July 2023 where he is involved in teaching orthodontics to undergraduates and postgraduates students.
During his time in teaching and doing research, Lagravère has won several awards and has published over 160 papers in important scientific journals. In July 2025, he became the director of the orthodontic graduate program at the University of Alberta.
Presently, he runs several clinical trials involving orthodontic treatments and its impact on airway, skeletal, and dental changes. In several of these trials, he works jointly with universities from the US, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Mexico. His research mainly focuses on the areas of maxillary expansion, bone-anchored mechanics, and three-dimensional analysis. He is also the Director of the Applied Oral Health Research Unit.
Dr. Ryan McCoy
Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon
Dr. Ryan McCoy is a registered specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Edmonton, Alberta, and a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC). An Edmontonian by birth, he earned his BSc and DDS at the University of Alberta, graduating with top academic honors.
After a General Practice Residency, Dr. McCoy completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency and master's degree at the University of Manitoba, followed by an Orthognathic and TMJ Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at the University of Toronto. His practice focuses on corrective jaw surgery, dental implants, and TMJ disorder management, prioritizing compassionate, patient-centered care. Dr. McCoy is also a clinical lecturer at the University of Alberta and actively involved in research and professional organizations.
