ENGL 309 A1: Indigenous Literature: Literary Movements

M. Dumont

Life Writing

Indigenous life writing is foundational to the development of Indigenous Literature. We will examine the history and significance of life-writing to the growing field of Indigenous Literature, the difference in reception to the writing by a settler and Indigenous audiences, styles of narrative voice, and issues arising from the genre. Key texts are chosen from early examples such as Half breed by Maria Campbell and move to more present day life-writing examples such as Mamaskatch by Darryl MacLeod.

Texts:

Half breed, Maria Campbell

From the Ashes, Jesse Thistle

Mamaskatch, Darryl Macleod

In My Own Moccasins, Helen Knott

Raised Somewhere Else, Colleen Cardinal
