Feminist Research Speaker Series: Teaching Ethically Queer, Trans, and 2S Topics

The Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Intersections of Gender Signature Area at the University of Alberta hosted the third lecture in the 2020 Feminist Research Speaker Series: Teaching Ethically Queer, Trans, and 2S Topics. Panelists in this roundtable discussed their roles in, approaches to, and challenges with teaching 2SLGBTQ+ topics. Speakers also reflected on methods and their respective teaching experiences.

Panelists:

Alexandra Marshall (she/her) is the rural education coordinator for the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services (ISMSS) based in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta. As a trans woman from rural Alberta, she has a background in education and working with newcomers to Canada as well as 2SLGBTQ+ teaching and advocacy.

Xavia A. Publius is a PhD student in Performance Studies at the University of Alberta as well as an artist, drag performer, and fanfiction author. A transwoman originally from the US, she researches queer representation in US film and television, trans history, trans participation in the performing arts, cyborg feminism, lavender linguistics, media archaeology, and fan studies.

Lana Whiskeyjack is a multidisciplinary treaty nêhiyaw scholarist from Saddle Lake Cree Nation and Assistant Professor in the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Alberta. Lana prioritizes Indigenous ways of knowing and being grounded in Indigenous ceremony and nêhiyawewin (Cree language) to explore the wahkohtowin (kinship systems), Indigenous sexual health, Indigenous women’s economic security, intergenerational resilience, Two-spirit family support, and Indigenous visual literacy.
