Project title: Leveraging new mechanistic insights to mitigate cisplatin-induced ototoxicity (CIO)

How would you describe your research project to someone without a scientific background?

We are trying to find a solution for hearing loss in children as a result of treatment with the chemotherapeutic drug, cisplatin.

What impact do you hope this project makes once completed?

We hope that by exploring the underlying mechanisms of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity (leading to hearing loss), we will be able to mitigate this major side effect in children.

How has the support from Li Ka Shing Institute of Virology helped you?

I think the state-of-the-art facilities and technologies supported by the Li Ka Shing institute of Virology will help me to conduct and expand my experiments.

What is it about your field of study that speaks to you?

I am interested in biomedical research because it’s about life. We explore living cells to improve our quality of life and other living beings. What could possibly be more interesting than that?!

What has been the greatest lesson you have learned while doing your research?

The greatest lesson that I have learnt is to not to be afraid of failure because failure and rejection is a huge part of research.

What is your favorite distraction or hobby?

I like reading and going to the movies.

If you could live in any other time, when might that be?

The first half of the 20th century because there were more interesting genetic studies back then.
