Congratulations to SLIS Professor Ali Shiri for Winning the J. Gordon Kaplan Award!

The J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research is awarded annually to outstanding University of Alberta researchers in the fields of Sciences or Engineering, Social Sciences, Humanities, Fine Arts, Education, and Law.

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ali Shiri, Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies, has been awarded the 2021 J. Gordon Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research! The award is named for the University’s first Vice-President (Research), this is the University of Alberta’s most prestigious research award. Two winners are awarded annually. It recognizes and honours faculty members: 

  • Whose research contributions, and impact (both academic and knowledge mobilization/translation), add significantly to our knowledge base. 
  • Who are recognized nationally and internationally for their scholarly accomplishments. 
  • Who set a standard of excellence for other University of Alberta faculty, graduate and undergraduate students and the community-at-large, as they contribute to our mission of research For the Public Good

The last time someone from the Faculty of Education received this award was in 2002. We are very excited that Dr. Shiri has been recognized for his excellence and are proud to have him as a colleague. 

Dr. Shiri's research areas focus on digital libraries, user interaction with digital information, knowledge organization systems, and more recently learning analytics. Currently, he has two funded research projects on digital libraries and learning and data analytics. In addition to his many contributions to SLIS, Dr. Shiri is currently Vice Dean, FGSR
