SLIS Marks the Passing of Alumna Maureen Pelensky

With sadness, SLIS marks the passing of alumna and teacher-librarian Maureen Pelensky

15 February 2023

The School honours the memory of Maureen Pelensky, teacher-librarian and SLIS alumna (class of 1996). Her obituary is copied below.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our loving wife, mom, "Mammo", sister, aunt, and friend, Maureen Elizabeth (Grant) Pelensky.

Maureen was smart, witty, thoughtful, kind, and universally adored. A beloved teacher-librarian in many Edmonton elementary schools, she was proud of being the gold medalist in her Masters of Library and Information Science program. Maureen composted before it was cool, travelled extensively, was a great listener, and really liked dogs. Most importantly, Maureen loved and lived for her family and friends.

Maureen is survived by her husband of 46 years Larry, children Allison (Jonathan) and Dan (Jon), her "babies" (grandchildren) Clara and William, sister Madeline, in-laws Helen, Shirley, and Peter (Sherry), her seven nieces and nephews and their spouses and children, and so many wonderful friends. Maureen was predeceased by her parents Murray and Betty Grant, her sister Heather, her father-in-law Bill, and her favourite dog Roxy.

A special thank you to Dr. Mark Hnatiuk and his team at the Kaye Clinic for their exceptional care, compassion, and guidance.
