Faces of WISEST: Hannah Stormer

My first experience with WISEST was the Summer Research Program (SRP 2016). Growing up I had always been interested in the STEM fields but had no idea what they would look like as a career. During the WISEST summer research program I had the opportunity to work in a computing science lab, present a research poster, and talk to a wide variety of people interested in or involved in research – and I found I enjoyed every minute of it!

My experiences during the WISEST summer research program were a key factor in my decision to pursue a science career: two years later, I began my undergrad at the University of Alberta. I had enjoyed my first experience with research during SRP 2016, which motivated me to continue to be involved in research during my undergrad (I would highly recommend BIOL *98/*99). After graduating in 2021 (BSc Honors in Animal Biology) I started an MSc in Ecology at the University of Alberta studying the distribution and diversity of sowbugs (Isopoda: Oniscidea) in the province. I am grateful to WISEST for providing valuable hands-on experience and mentorship that started me off on a career in science.

Ma première expérience avec WISEST a été le Summer Research Program (SRP 2016). En grandissant, j'ai toujours été intéressée par les domaines de STIM, mais je n'avais aucune idée de ce à quoi ressemblerait une carrière dans ces domaines. Pendant le programme de recherche d'été WISEST, j'ai eu l'occasion de travailler dans un laboratoire d'informatique, de présenter une affiche de recherche et de parler à une grande variété de personnes intéressées ou impliquées dans la recherche - et j'ai trouvé que j'ai apprécié chaque minute de cette expérience !

Mes expériences dans le cadre du programme de recherche d'été WISEST ont joué un rôle clé dans ma décision de poursuivre une carrière scientifique : deux ans plus tard, j'ai commencé mes études de premier cycle à l'Université de l'Alberta. J'avais apprécié ma première expérience de recherche pendant le SRP 2016, ce qui m'a motivé à continuer à m'impliquer dans la recherche pendant mon premier cycle (je recommande vivement BIOL *98/*99). Après avoir obtenu mon baccalauréat en 2021 (BSc en biologie animale avec distinction), j'ai commencé un MSc en écologie à l'Université de l'Alberta en étudiant la distribution et la diversité des cloportes (Isopoda: Oniscidea) dans la province. Je suis reconnaissante à WISEST de m'avoir fourni une expérience pratique et un mentorat précieux qui m'ont permis d'entamer une carrière scientifique.
