About Me

I teach in the Writing Studies program in the Office of Interdisciplinary Studies but my formal appointment is as a Professor in the Department of English and Film Studies. I am the Director of Writing Across the Curriculum, and Associate Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning at the University of Alberta. I have written or edited ten books and 30+ articles, including Writing Instruction in Canadian Universities and a series of handbooks for Pearson Canada. My current research interests include writing assignments across disciplinary fields and group writing tutorials to support student writers in disciplines throughout post-secondary education. I have given over 250 presentations to students at the U of A in the last seven years in courses from Fine Arts to Business, Sociology to Political Science, and Engineering to Nursing.

Research

My main research interests are writing studies generally with a focus on writing across the curriculum; business, professional, and technical writing; and academic writing.

My current research project is editing a book based on a Canada-wide study of writing assignments in 36 different departments at 12 universities.

Teaching

For the past three years I have taught Writing Studies 102: Writing in the Disciplines, a first year course in academic writing that enrols 200 students in each section. This course uses The Game of Writing software we developed here at the University of Alberta to support students commenting on the drafts of other students' writing.
