About Me

I am an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics and Spanish in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, and I am also the Spanish Language Program Coordinator. I have been teaching at the University of Alberta since 2013.

Currently, I am also the Co-Editor-in-Chief, with Dr. Leila Ranta, of Language Awareness, the journal of the Association for Language Awareness.

I was born and raised in Barcelona, Spain, where I completed a B.A. in English and German Philology and a M.Ed. in Language Education at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. I also hold a Ph.D. in Second Language Education from the University of New Brunswick.

I am an applied linguist with a research focus on Second Language Education. In particular, I am interested in explicit knowledge representations of language, grammar teaching and learning, Task-based Language Teaching, and teacher education.

Currently I am working on two projects related to Task-based Language Teaching. One of the projects is a program evaluation study about the implementation of a task-based curriculum in the Spanish language classes at the University of Alberta. This project is funded by a grant from the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund of the University of Alberta.

The second project I am working on is a collaborative research with my colleagues Bill Dunn and Leila Ranta, from the Faculty of Education, about the role teacher education plays in the adoption of pedagogical innovations such as TBLT by student teachers.

I teach courses in Applied Linguistics, mainly about Second Language Education, at the undergraduate and graduate level, and Spanish language courses at the undergraduate level. I supervise graduate students working on topics related to Second Language Education. I also coordinate the Spanish Language Program at the University of Alberta.

In 2017, I was the recipient of the Faculty of Arts Undergraduate Teaching Award (Early Achievement).
