  • Language instruction at ALL LEVELS, including ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS and ADVANCED.
  • 6 additional credits in University of Alberta courses on topics related to your stay in Taiwan
  • opportunities to interact with university students at our partner institution
  • experiencing Taipei, one of the world's most cosmopolitan cities

Application deadline: September 19, 2014

Eligible students

All University of Alberta students are welcome, including students already fluent in Chinese. However,

  • Priority will go to a) language students, and b) majors and minors in the Department of East Asian Studies
  • Students from outside the Faculty of Arts should check with their own faculty about credit transfer

Students from other universities in Alberta are also eligible to apply.

Partner institution in Taiwan

National Taiwan Normal University 國立臺灣師範大學 is one of Taiwan's top universities, and the home of the prestigious Mandarin Training Center (http://web.mtc.ntnu.edu.tw/mtcweb/).

Credits and courses

Students will receive up to 15 credits:

  • 6 or 9 credits at National Taiwan Normal University. Language students will take courses in the Mandarin Training Center. Students fluent in Chinese may choose from NTNU's broad course offerings.
    • Intensive classes (9 credits) meet 15 hours per week. All levels. Average class size: 6-10 students.
  • 6 UofA credits (2 courses) with Zeb Raft (Assistant Professor, East Asian Studies). With a small group of NTNU students, you will take one writing-intensive course, involving readings from and about Taiwan. Your other course will be a "practical study" of Taiwanese culture, including field trips and a significant small-group research project.

Dates

To accommodate NTNU's course schedule, we will begin and end later than Winter Term in Edmonton, so students should plan accordingly. The program will run from mid-February to late-May (late June for non-language students). Dates will be announced when the NTNU calendar becomes available.

Note: Students must remain in Taipei until the end of the MTC term and receive a passing grade and satisfactory attendance record as defined by the MTC in order to be approved for transfer credit. Students taking regular NTNU classes (not language classes) should plan to stay for the entire NTNU semester (18 weeks, through mid-June).

Housing

Housing in NTNU dorms will be available, but rental housing in the area is abundant and relatively inexpensive.

Visas

Canadian passport holders are visa-exempt for 90 days, extendable for another 90 days. International students should check the visa requirements for their respecitve countries (http://www.boca.gov.tw/np.asp?ctNode=776&mp=2).
