Soraiya Lalani is a University of Alberta medical student with a strong interest in leadership, research, and improving health-care systems. Her path to medicine began as a first responder during high school and university, experiences that shaped her understanding of teamwork, service, and compassionate care during times of crisis.

Prior to medical school, Soraiya earned a Master of Public Health in Healthcare Management from Boston University and gained experience in health-care administration at BC Children’s Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Working alongside clinicians and senior leaders, she contributed to initiatives focused on improving patient access, hospital operations, and the delivery of care.

During her time at the University of Alberta, Soraiya served as President of the Medical Students’ Association, representing approximately 700 medical students and championing opportunities for leadership, collaboration, and mentorship. Her research interests include quality improvement, professionalism, and medical education, with her work presented at conferences across Canada.

Soraiya was recently recognized with the 2026 Best Quality Improvement Oral Presentation Award at the DoM's Me2 Majumdar Research and QI Day for her research exploring ways to strengthen care coordination across Alberta’s health-care system. Guided by a vision of physician leadership that extends beyond individual patient encounters, she hopes to contribute to meaningful improvements in health care while supporting better experiences for patients, learners, and health-care teams.
