Three Department of Medicine learners recognized with American Society of Nephrology Kidney STARS Awards
6 October 2026
Congratulations to Dr. Cameron Wong (PGY2 Internal Medicine), Maija Kowalchuk (MSc student) and Etay Ben-Eli (MSc student), who have been selected for the American Society of Nephrology (ASN) Kidney STARS (Students and Residents) Award program.
The ASN Kidney STARS (Students and Residents) program is designed to encourage medical students, residents and graduate students to explore careers in nephrology and kidney research. The program provides learners with opportunities to connect with nephrologists, researchers and other trainees while gaining exposure to the breadth of the field.
As Kidney STARS recipients, Cameron, Maija and Etay will receive complimentary registration to ASN Kidney Week, the ASN's annual meeting, along with $1,500 in travel support. The program also includes tailored educational events and networking opportunities designed to help participants explore the possibilities of a career in nephrology.
The American Society of Nephrology has nearly 22,000 members representing 141 countries, making Kidney Week an opportunity for our learners to connect with kidney professionals and researchers from around the world.
Also kudos to Janine Nel, a medical student from Dr. Ahmed's lab (though not in DoM), who received the same ASN award.
Please join us in congratulating Cameron, Maija, Etay and Janine on this achievement and wishing them an enriching experience at ASN Kidney Week, October 22 - 24.
