Dr. Sofia Ahmed receives the American Heart Association's Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease Mid-Career Achievement Award

Congratulations to Dr. Sofia Ahmed, Professor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Nephrology and University of Alberta Chair in Sex and Gender, on receiving the 2026 Council on the Kidney in Cardiovascular Disease Mid-Career Achievement Award from the American Heart Association.

This prestigious award recognizes mid-career investigators whose achievements have made a significant impact on cardiovascular disease research related to kidney failure. It honours Dr. Ahmed’s contributions to advancing knowledge at the intersection of kidney and cardiovascular health.

An internationally recognized nephrologist and clinician-scientist, Dr. Ahmed’s research explores how sex, gender, reproductive factors, menopause and hormone use influence kidney function, cardiovascular health and blood pressure. Her work has helped address important knowledge gaps in kidney and gender health, including research on estimating kidney function in transgender and gender-diverse adults receiving gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Dr. Ahmed has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to national and international guidelines and scientific statements in kidney, hypertension and cardiovascular health. She also serves as Academic Lead – Women’s Health at the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute, where she supports research advancing women’s health.

Through her research, leadership and mentorship, Dr. Ahmed continues to make important contributions to nephrology and cardiovascular health in Canada and internationally.
