ENGL 103 A26: Case Studies in Research: Alternative Views or We never thought of it like that...

M. Morris

ENGL 103 introduces students to university level research, discussion, and argument. In this section we’ll be doing this by looking at two books and one movie, and the cultural and historical contexts in which they were written – all three of them make us look at the world in different ways, and challenge our assumptions. Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead is an American classic from the woman who has influenced US politics and social thought more than any other, and whose ideas continue to set the agenda in the States. Paying the Land is an amazing graphic book, A Literary Hub’s Most Anticipated book of 2020, by Joe Sacco, “one of our greatest living graphic journalists”, and is set in Canada’s north. Unforgiven is one of Clint Eastwood’s masterpieces, a revisionist Western that won four Oscars (including Best Movie and Best Director), was filmed in Alberta, and is in every top 100 movies of all-time list.
