ENGL 378 B2: Canadian Literature and Culture: Contemporary Cultural Texts

M. Cormier

This course will engage the COVID-19 pandemic as a retrospective framing device to discuss recent texts and cultural objects in twenty-first-century Canada, questioning how they function in the current moment to shed new light on colonization, systemic racism, the Anthropocene, and other prevalent crises. We will proceed throughout the course by grounding our discussions in contemporary cultural theory and criticism to supplement our reading of literary texts. Students in the course can expect to participate in experiential engagement and in-class presentations as well as produce a term research paper in lieu of a final exam.
