Notes about the University Alibaba Cloud Network Service

Due to Chinese regulations we are not able to offer full access to the Internet through this Alibaba Cloud Network Service connection. Websites such as YouTube and Google Translate are regulated and need to be restricted.

Some of the restricted sites will display the message similar to the following:
“An application is stopping Chrome from safely connecting to this site” “Fortinet is not configured correctly. Uninstalling Fortinet usually fixes the problem. Applications that can cause this error include antivirus, firewall, and web-filtering or proxy software”

If this happens, record the URL, disconnect from the Cloud Network Service, and try accessing again. If the link came from eClass or a university website please submit a ticket to the IT Service Desk with the url and a brief description of where it came from. We will do our best to enable that url while still complying with Chinese regulations.

Experiencing Connection Issues?

If you are a student learning from China using the UAlberta Alibaba Cloud Network Service and already have a previous configuration set up, you may need to make a configuration change within the VPN software. Please see the following instructions to conduct the change.

How to Reconfigure the UAlberta Alibaba Cloud Network Service

Click on the menu icon next to your current VPN configuration, then click Edit the selected connection.

In the Remote Gateway field, replace remotelearning.ualberta.ca with 139.196.92.112, then click Save.

The University of Alberta Alibaba Cloud Network Service is now reconfigured and you can connect using your CCID and password. Please note that as a result of this configuration change, you will receive a warning message about a certificate. While you need to be aware and cautious of security warnings, in this case it is fine to proceed and click Continue.
