Rowen Grimshaw undergraduate student BKin/BEd

Student: Rowen Grimshaw
Year: 2nd
Program:
Bachelor of Kinesiology

Why did you choose the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation for your undergraduate degree?

I've always been really interested in sports and fitness, and I figured if I was going to invest money into my education I at least wanted to study something that genuinely interests me and that I would enjoy, which makes it much more worth it and way more fun. The Kin program here is quite reputable and has a great atmosphere, plus it's close to home which saves money

What were your biggest challenges of taking undergraduate classes, how did you overcome them?

Learning how to study effectively was definitely a challenge, and something I'm still working on as well. The first couple weeks of first year were really isolating and lonely, but once I made friends, that was gone and now school is way more fun. Lastly, learning how to manage your time and work and learn independently was a big change coming from high school but gets easier as time goes by.

What advice do you have for new undergraduate students?

Try your best to make new friends, even though it seems really terrifying - trust me, it makes the whole university experience way more fun if you know you have people you can rely on and have fun with. And figure out a way of studying that works for you - it may take some trial and error, but it's so much easier to study when you know the information will actually stay in your brain when you're done!

What do you like to do for fun or relaxation?

As a kin student, it's no surprise that I often use exercise as a way to relax - whether that's rock climbing, swimming in West Pool or anything in between. I also love getting outside to hike (when it's nice weather) and watching Netflix (when it's not as nice outside).

Why did you want to choose the photos above?

I chose the hiking photo since hiking is one of my favourite hobbies, and that photo was taken on my favourite trail. The photo with the bear I included simply because photos with the bear is a KSR tradition!
