International Ophthalmology

At the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, there has been a long history of involvement in global health initiatives in developing countries and under-served communities. Amongst our current ophthalmologists, there are many ongoing connections to International organizations and affiliations involved with prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness.

Initiatives in developing countries include capacity building to improve local ophthalmology services and long-term sustainability, training and fellowships for local eye care providers, and direct service delivery in performing cataract and sub-specialty surgeries. Further, some of our ophthalmologists are also involved with tele-ophthalmology for screening of conditions such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy in under-served areas.

The following map is a representation of the countries in which our ophthalmologists have participated in global health initiatives (please see red stars).
