Pediatric Sleep Medicine Fellowship

Overview

The Pediatric Sleep Medicine Fellowship program at the University of Alberta is a 12-month program that provides fellows with the knowledge and skills necessary to care for the full spectrum of sleep disorders. The curriculum is built on a base of core training in pediatric medicine, including sub-specialty pediatric medicine. While the core training can be completed in one year, a second year of training can be considered to suit the learning needs of a trainee.

Training and experience

Fellows are integrated within the multi-disciplinary team, and work closely with all disciplines. They will develop the skills necessary to complete a polysomnogram from start to finish, and work closely with both the lab and clinicians to score and interpret these studies. Fellows are also scheduled for ambulatory clinics to gain exposure to various clinical presentations and to develop an approach to manage all aspects of sleep disorders including:

  • insomnia
  • sleep-related breathing disorders
  • circadian rhythm disorders
  • parasomnias
  • movement disorders
  • other sleep disorders

Fellows are integrated within clinics, though are also provided with an opportunity to follow their own patients longitudinally. Specific rotations focusing on non-invasive ventilation further supports training experiences, as does rotations with adult colleagues.

A total of 8 weeks of electives can be pursued to tailor learning experiences to individuals’ specific needs. Fellows are provided time to work on scholarly activity, which can include research, medical education, or other administrative projects.

Teaching is provided to fellows on a weekly basis, though in order to promote a culture of lifelong learning, fellows are also encouraged to present to the group on interesting patients or when clinical questions arise.
