Observatory hosts viewing of the Transit of Venus

The transit of Venus is occurring June 5th, and the University of Alberta Observatory will be hosting a viewing event.

(Edmonton) Join us for a once in a lifetime observing opportunity! The transit of Venus is occurring June 5th, and the University of Alberta Observatory will be hosting a viewing event.

Transits of Venus are rare occurrences, and occur every century in eight-year pairs. The last transit was June 8th, 2004. The next transit of Venus won't occur until December 10th, 2117.

This event takes place in the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS), located on the University of Alberta North Campus.

This event is free, and all members of the public are welcome to visit. You can drop in for part or all of the event.

Introductory talk about the Transit of Venus by Dr. Sharon Morsink

4:00 - 4:30 pm: CCIS South Patio
Viewing begins in U of A Quad (South side of CCIS, ground level)

4:05 pm
Venus ingress into solar disk

4:30 pm
U of A Observatory opens for viewing

8:00 pm
U of A Observatory closes (view blocked by neighbouring buildings)

9:58 pm
Sunset

10:50 pm
Venus egress out of solar disk (not visible from Edmonton)

If you can't make it out to the Observatory you can purchase inexpensive eclipse glasses from the Science Shop at Southgate Mall or at the gift shop at Telus World of Science. Number 14 shade of welder's glass is also safe for observing the Sun.
