~ ~ ~ by at least 9 weeks before the exam ~ ~ ~

The supervisor must submit 3 potential external examiner names by filling out this form. The FGSR Thesis Coordinator (TC) will reach out to first External preference and ask if they are interested to serve as an external or reader and ask for CV. This email will also include the Conflict of Interest checklist.

TC verifies details provided by the External and passes off to the FGSR AD for academic sign off.

TC forwards the FGSR academic sign off to the Graduate Program Assistant, and lets the supervisor know. 

~ ~ ~ by at least 5 weeks before the exam ~ ~ ~

Supervisory committee members read and evaluate thesis. They sign the Preliminary Acceptance of Thesis form (PDF, 12.8k) and give the signed form to the Physics Graduate Program Assistant to share with the TC.

Supervisor recommends arm's length examiner to the Physics Graduate Program Assistant and the Exam Chair is appointed. The Graduate Program Assistant lets the TC know of the examining committee, and the TC sets up the exam.

student gives each examiner a copy of the thesis, the version that will be defended

Supervisor gives exam information to the Physics Graduate Program Assistant:

  • date and time of the exam
  • names of examiners
  • name of exam committee chair

The Physics Graduate Program Assistant will write up the exam committee form and send it to the Faculty office for approval

Supervisor sends the thesis to TC for distribution.

Student prepares a 10-20 page document (talk to one's supervisor about this) addressing one's proposed research area and project.
