Recent debates about the so-called Gospel of Jesus' Wife, the Green Collection (Museum of the Bible), and the publication of ancient artifacts have revealed the importance of knowing the provenance of manuscripts, whether a single papyrus or an entire papyri collection. Yet little is known about the provenance of significant collections of papyri in American and European institutions.
Based on archival research, this lecture will describe the acquisition of Biblical manuscripts by these institutions (with a particular focus on the British Museum) and address the legal, ethical, and academic issues surrounding these collections of treasures.
