Pediatric Anesthesia

This one year clinical fellowship takes place at the Stollery Childrens' Hospital located at the University of Alberta Hospital campus. Fellows learn and practice perioperative care for pediatric patients of all ages in all surgical disciplines as well as multiple out of OR locations. The large congenital cardiac surgical program affords an excellent opportunity to care for patients with cardiac disease both in the context of surgical repair and anesthesia for non-cardiac surgery. Enhanced learning opportunities include one month rotations in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia and the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, as well as exposure to both the acute and chronic pain pain services supported by our department. Fellows are encouraged to become involved in clinical teaching of residents and medical students and are supported to complete a scholarly/research project during their fellowship.

Program Structure

Fellows spend the first 2 months of their experience paired to lists with a supervising staff anesthesiologist to provide mentoring and assessment of basic skills. After this time, fellows are scheduled with their own lists and a designated remote supervisor on non-academic days. The complexity of assigned lists is gradually increased over time, individualized to the fellow's comfort.

Home call coverage, with staff supervision, is expected with a 1 in 5 frequency during training.

One month rotations in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia and the Pediatric Intensive Unit are mandatory. Time is allocated to attend the pediatric chronic pain clinic and cover the Acute Pain Service supervised by our group.

A scholarly/research project must be completed and is typically presented at our departmental research day in May of each year.
