Undergraduate Program

Biochemistry is one of the most broadly useful disciplines for understanding modern biology. The field of biochemistry is concerned with the complex chemical reactions that occur in wide varieties of biological systems; as a result, it provides the basis for practical advances in medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture. Biochemistry can be combined with numerous other sciences - chemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, cell biology and many others - to provide both an individually-tailored and well-rounded course of studies as part of an undergraduate career.

Many rewarding career options are possible for graduates with a B.Sc. in biochemistry, either involving more specialized studies or moving directly into the workforce. Many biochemistry students move into graduate studies upon completion of their degree, working towards either M.Sc. or Ph.D. degrees - this is an essential step in pursuing an academic career within university or college systems worldwide. Many students move into professional programs like medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, business or law - biochemistry provides a superb background for any of these fields. A B.Sc. in biochemistry is also a strong background for technologists - these scientists are required in laboratories to carry out basic research, applied science or biotechnological production. In business, technical representatives with a B.Sc. serve as a knowledgeable liaison between the public and various drug, science, or technological companies.

This is by no means an exhaustive list - any undergraduate degree forms a good foundation for many future careers; there are always opportunities for innovation and development that depend only on the creativity and dedication of the graduate.
