Dr. Peter Hamilton ACP Staff Award

This award is named in honour of Dr. Peter Hamilton, a general internist, former program director for 10 years of the Core Internal Medicine program and strong advocate for the American College of Physicians (ACP) in Alberta. This award is given to the Attending Physician who best exemplifies the mission of the ACP and the character of Dr. Peter Hamilton, including excellence and enthusiasm for medicine, patient advocacy and professionalism.

Dr. Churchill was an excellent staff physician to work with. He had an incredible emphasis on the humanity of medicine and took time out of the day to reflect upon our role in the healthcare system and our effects on patients. 

Dr. Peter Hamilton ACP Resident Award

This award is given to the Resident Physician who best exemplifies the mission of the ACP and the character of Dr. Peter Hamilton, including excellence and enthusiasm for medicine, patient advocacy and professionalism.

Dr. Jha is a caring resident who explores patient values and perspectives with great sensitivity, demonstrating exceptional empathy and professionalism in her clinical work.

Gerald Stewart Staff Award for Wellbeing and Morale

Established in 2004, this award is given annually to a Department of Medicine faculty member who took the time to help residents or students in their training. Nominations are submitted by PGY1, PGY2, and PGY3 core medicine residents.

Dr. Boyington cares for everyone around him, including staff, patients, and learners. He consistently goes above and beyond to support and mentor those around him, ensuring positive learning experiences for all learners.

Ethel Marliss Award

Established in 1997, the Ethel Marliss award is presented to a fourth-year medicine resident who demonstrates exceptional ability to communicate with patients under their care. The recipient must show not only exemplary clinical skills, but also exceptional sensitivity to the personal needs and concerns of patients and their immediate circle of relatives and/or caregivers.

Dr. Alsebti is the most empathic and caring fellow, spending significant time with patients and their families. He demonstrates endless patience, even with difficult individuals, and consistently exemplifies compassionate patient care.

Best Resident Advocate

This award is given to the Attending Physician who serves as the best resident advocate in areas such as mentoring, career planning, etc.

Dr. Sikosana is an excellent mentor, providing guidance, support, and advocacy for residents throughout their training. His steady leadership and willingness to listen have had a meaningful impact on resident wellness and professional growth.

Best Academic Half Day

This award is given to the Attending Physician who presented the best Internal Medicine Academic Half Day. 

Dr. Croden’s lecture was incredibly well-organized and insightful, making complex hematology topics approachable and engaging for all learners.

Patient Care Unit Award

This award was established in 2005 by the lead residents and is given to the care unit that best exemplifies:

• Teamwork
• Effective and exceptional patient care including patient advocacy
• Professional and supportive interactions with resident and staff physicians

Charge nurses are spectacular, check in with the floor nurses and ensure they are looked after, which helps residents and optimizes patient care.

Medical Student Teaching Excellence Award

This award recognizes a resident who has been nominated by medical students for outstanding dedication to teaching and mentorship during their clerkship. This award celebrates the important role residents play in supporting and guiding medical students during their training.

Congratulations to Dr. Gareth Leung, PGY-2, UAH.

Dr. Leung is an exceptional resident and teacher. He creates a welcoming and safe learning environment, consistently offering guidance, feedback, and support to both medical students and residents. Gareth goes above and beyond, taking the initiative to provide teaching and advice, assisting with patient care and documentation, and making himself available even outside of clinic hours. 

Gerald Stewart Resident Award for Wellbeing and Morale

Established in 2004, this award winner is a resident who demonstrates the qualities and characteristics of Dr. Gerald Stewart: caring and compassionate, upbeat and enthusiastic, dedicated community involvement, athleticism, and a love of the outdoors. The recipient will receive $500 to extend “random acts of kindness” to patients and/or fellow residents in the hospital.

Congratulations to Dr. Emily Macphail, PGY 3, Division of Core Internal Medicine.

Dr. Macphail brings consistent positivity, energy, and kindness to everyone she works with. She is exceptionally supportive of learners and frequently offers teaching, even to those not directly on her team. She truly serves as the heart of her cohort.
